My name is Assel El-Rayes. An Ottawa-based Canadian artist, of Palestinian origins, from Gaza City.

  • I have been drawing and painting since I was a 5-year-old girl. I found my comfort in abstract and semi-representational painting.
  • I noticed that my color choices, brush strokes, and mark-making was very much affected by my emotional, mental and physical state.
  • I studied positive art psychology, color therapy, art therapy, mindfulness, and life coaching to further my understanding.
  • I figured out that I have been practicing mindfulness and meditation through painting all my life.
  • This realization was a moment of enlightenment. I realized the connection between painting, colors, mindfulness, meditation, and well-being.
  • I owe the Ottawa School of Art especially, my painting instructor and mentor Ms. Lucia De Marinis, and my family, a special thank you for being such a great source of guidance, support, and inspiration.
  • Each artist looks for inspiration that stirs thoughts and emotions. I find my inspiration in all my surroundings; people, nature, music, and books.
  • I hope you enjoy visiting my website, where I showcase my artwork.
